Your monitor might be fitted with a rotary switch that allows you to switch from mains power (AC) to battery power (12 VDC) without touching the wiring.
 -

These monitors also have a DC-DC converter (big blue box) and a battery voltage monitor which allows you to set an alert if the voltage drops.

To connect a battery so you can easily go from mains power to battery power:
 -

Remove the cover from the power and data interface (PDI).
 -

Wire your battery to the green input terminals on the PDI board.
 -

When using battery power, the PDI lights should come on when the rotary switch is set to BATT.
